Meeting your monthly expenses is hard enough as it is. When that month is December, however, it becomes even harder due to the holidays.
Luckily, there are charities like Toys for Tots that offer Christmas assistance. With their help, you can make sure that your kids have a smile on their face, regardless of your budget.
Which charities are best when it comes to Christmas assistance? We’ll list some of them here.
Please note that even if they can’t get to you this year due to limited availability, keep them in mind for the years to come.
Toys for Tots
Since 1947, the Toys for Tots program has supplied over 566 million toys to nearly 258 million children. Run by the United States Marines and local volunteers, this program takes toys and financial contributions from donors and corporate sponsors like Delta, Hallmark, and Sears. It then distributes them to less fortunate children so they too can enjoy the holidays.
How impactful is Toys for Tots? So much so that it’s helped low-income parents put at least one gift under the tree. You can read real-life testimonials like this via their Stories page.
The holiday season often brings with it colder weather, as well as Salvation Army volunteers ringing bells in front of stores. What do they do with their donations? A wide variety of things, such as:
- The Angel Tree Program – Puts new toys and clothes under the Christmas trees of one million children.
- Food and grocery assistance – Gives seniors and low-income families holiday meals, plus stocks food pantries.
- Bill-pay assistance – Pays utility bills for families in need so they can keep the heater on during those frigid winter nights.
- Holiday events – Bringing joy to local communities via toy and clothing donations, meal delivery, nursing home events, bell ringing, and hospital visits.
Lions Clubs International
Lions Clubs serve their local communities in over 200 countries across the globe. While they offer several services year-round, they’re particularly helpful with Christmas assistance.
To find the Lions Club nearest you, go here. Although it’s recommended you contact them one to two months before Christmas to receive help, your local club still may be able to help.
As with many volunteer organizations, Christmas assistance in the form of toys, clothes, and the like is on a first-come, first-served basis. Whether or not you can be helped at the last minute depends on the number of donations and volunteers in your area.
